Gareth Southgate has explained the reason for playing Mount over Grealish against Belgium a ‘tactical move’.
Jack Grealish wasn’t used by his national team manager Gareth Southgate against Belgium which was shocking to many Aston Villa fans and they showed their anger on social media.
After the game, Southgate explained his decision and hit back at Mount’s critics by saying, “He’s a top player. He can receive [the ball] under pressure. He’s intelligent with his movement. He’s, of course, still learning. To find space in the first half was difficult.”
“But in a tactical game where it’s just as important defensively what the forwards do, to have a player like him who can do both sides… the way that Marcus Rashford did, the way Dominic Calvert-Lewin did.”
“I read a lot of things about Mason and I think he’s a very under-appreciated player – but not by us.”
Jack gave a man of the match performance against Wales after which it was certain for some fans that he will continue to start for The Three Lions but that wasn’t included in the plans of Southgate.
Grealish could still start against Denmark on Wednesday before returning to Aston Villa on Thursday.
